In the survey, more than 600 B2B marketing executives answered questions about their budgets, marketing mix, and key challenges for 2011. 1 in 3 marketers think measuring ROI will be their top marketing challenge in 2011. That popularity may be short-lived, however: 53 percent of marketers were only “somewhat satisfied” with their company’s marketing performance in 2010, and more than two-thirds (69 percent) plan to test new digital tactics in 2011.

2011: The year of personal brands

This is the year that the personal brand begins to do battle with the corporate brand. I think we need to let the personal brand win—especially in B2B. Featuring big pictures and bios of your subject matter experts on your website is a good start, but it is the equivalent of paid search. It’s relevant but still a step removed from the truly personal connection. We need the equivalent of organic search, where our people rise to the top on their own, independent of their corporate affiliations.

I spent most of this week at Salesforce.com ’s Dreamforce conference. With 45,000 registrants, the company says that Dreamforce is now the largest technology industry gathering. I don’t know whether that’s true (as someone pointed out, the Consumer Electronics Show is much bigger, for starters). But I did notice about two years ago that pretty much everyone in the B2B marketing automation space was more or less assuming I’d attend. Peer pressure worked, and there I was.
