In an online event this morning, webcast service provider On24 showed off a new webcasting platform that provides the kind of multimedia and social-media integration that the technology needs to thrive. One of my complaints about traditional webcasts is the dominance of the slides, which are rarely compelling, to put it politely.

The Point

What is more clear, based on the Webcast invitation I received this week (below), is that it hasn’t done much for Eloqua’s own email marketing. Neither the headline, subhead, nor the title of the event itself provide any kind of specific, credible idea of what I would gain from attending the Webcast. If this campaign is to be a series, as billed, it’s begging for a visual theme, a brand, that ties together the different Webcasts and makes each email stand out from the pack.

Email Critique: Adobe Webcast Invite Keeps It Simple

The Point

In this case, an invitation to download a recorded Webcast, Adobe combines a clean email design with clear, concise selling copy that gets to the point quickly and with a minimum of fuss. Normally I’m not a fan of yes/no questions (“Did you know …”) but here the question serves to sell the offer and highlight what the reader will learn in the Webcast. I don’t really know this is a Webcast until I read the body copy, and even then it’s not entirely clear what I’m being asked to do.
