I think twitter is more of a heavily curated rss reader/feeder rather than a portal, and I suspect that presenting twitter to new users as more of a friendly way to use rss that as a way to push conversation with strangers would help quite a bit. I mean content should be king, not one-liners on the likes of Twitter.
