Remember those banner ads that you used to see when scrolling through MySpace or talking to your best friend via the antiquated AOL Instant Messenger? There are tons and tons of ad blocking software services out there that work to block the interruptive ads, adware, banner ads, Flash, and pop-ups we all hate so much while we're surfing the web. 1994: The first banner ads appear. The age of banner ads had officially begun. Wired magazine's former online off-shoot HotWired for introducing the world to the enduringly ubiquitous banner ad. AT&T paid HotWired $30,000 to place the banner ad above on their site for three months.
