The first time I tried to stand up on a board was in a lagoon in north San Diego county. When we found ourselves on the shallow side of the lagoon, I fell a couple times into knee-deep, sticky, black mud. And I did – after another couple hours, I could stand on a paddleboard for all of 10 seconds.
