The investment can be read as validation of Infusionsoft’s strategy of offering unified marketing automation, CRM, and ecommerce exclusively for very small businesses. Only study I can find is from Loopfuse in 2011, which found just under 30% of marketing automation users do lead scoring. But I’m pretty sure there are others.

Open source has been successful in related applications including analytics (R, Jaspersoft, Pentaho), CRM (SugarCRM, vTiger) and Web content management (WordPress, Joomla, Drupal). The failure of freemium (though not open source) offerings from LoopFuse and Genius are strong evidence that being free is not enough.

There are free papers on the Raab Guide site that can help you organize this process and of course I do consult in this area for a living.
