Do you use your personal twitter account (@MaureenEditor) in your professional role as editor of Residential Design + Build ? I do manage RD+B ’s Twitter account plus my @MaureenEditor account. I also manage RD+B ’s Facebook page.

But on Twitter and his blog he ranges far more widely than what we usually think of as marketing. Even when he wasn’t yet the expert on social media that he is now (see his excellent primer, The Tao of Twitter , for example), his dispassionate looks at new-media platorms and personalities were both entertaining and informative.

Our traditional mass-market culture and ways of doing business are built around serving the mass, the normal. If you choose Twitter, for instance, you might pick a number of tweets to do each day and a number of people to retweet. Pick a platform, set a goal for how to use it, and stick to your plan.

But they’ll also bring to light valuable new platforms as well, like Facebook and Twitter, and perhaps even Google Plus. But they might just save your business. Will they sometimes wax too enthusiastic about new tools that turn out to be dead ends, like Jaiku , FriendFeed , or Google Wave ? Yes, such enthusiasts can be annoying.

Though its default design is overly busy for my taste, its many options allow CSS wizards to transform it dramatically. The Really Simple Twitter Feed Widget to show my recent tweets in the sidebar. I like the minimalist look of this widget much better than the gaudy excess of the official Twitter widget used in the previous design.
