IBM Social Computing Guidelines. Blogs, wikis, social networks, virtual worlds and social media. In the spring of 2005, IBMers used a wiki to create a set of guidelines for all IBMers who wanted to blog. So we turned to IBMers again to re-examine our guidelines and determine what needed to be modified.

The Associated Press (AP) today released its 2010 AP Stylebook , which includes a new section that spells out new guidelines relating to social media. The guidelines also provide information and policies on how to use tools like Facebook and Twitter , how journalists can apply these policies and how to verify the sources found through them.

One of the cornerstones of a social media strategy is having a clear set of corporate social media guidelines or policies. IBM and SAP put their draft guidelines on wikis, where employees were invited to make comments and suggestions. Guidelines are not guardrails. The guidelines should include a place to go for advice.

Explain your goals and establish clear guidelines for any mention of the company on social media sites. Wikis (Wikipedia, hundreds of specific topic-focused wikis). This presents misunderstandings (at the least) and enlists your people beyond just the marketing and PR groups.

Wikipedia is an influential data source, open for all, but it does follow strict guidelines on what information it accepts. Get referenced in other Wiki pages. A mention from the right blogger can trigger a cascade of great press for your business. It’s important to have multiple users contribute to the page. Get More Mentions.

Guidelines for managing your Online Reputation. So if you’re just some random blogger or website, may not get accepted, because they may not consider it a reliable site, and you can get a lot of those for cheap. So you want to make sure that the person you’re working with stays within the guidelines and does that.

According to the Indianapolis Super Bowl Host Committee , Klout was used to help identify the participants, and the list was augmented manually with known local bloggers, gadflies, and connectors. I’m sure Wal-Mart will gladly publish their blogger outreach criteria. Maybe a Wiki?
