For travel, I recently exchanged my USB air card that I used on my Macbook (Verizon, $60/month) for a MiFi (same price), so that I can make my own Wi-Fi hotspot at any time, and connect up to 5 devices to it (usually iPad, iPhone, MacBook, wife's iPhone, kids' iPod Touch). Pretty cheap by current standards. Great for output.
