Got your fundraising appeal for Wikipedia. Let me start by saying I’m a huge fan of Wikipedia; it is a truly amazing tool and a tremendous accomplishment. The Wikipedia cabal. I understand you don’t want Wikipedia to devolve into a collection of marketing brochures. It’s an over-used PR buzzword.

These individuals are often the “face&# of their organizations; as they get quoted in press releases and news articles, pen bylined articles, speak at conferences, and talk to industry influencers and prospective customers, their names can become almost as well known as their brands. Consider writing a Wikipedia page about yourself.

This presents misunderstandings (at the least) and enlists your people beyond just the marketing and PR groups. Wikis (Wikipedia, hundreds of specific topic-focused wikis). Sure, social media can in some cases drive lead generation and even direct sales (so can PR), but that isn’t its strength or its primary purpose.
