Wikipedia has a good explanation of it ( [link] ). Considering Facebook acts as more of an aggregator than the actual source (like a blog post), it would seem more prudent for them to go through the provider hosting the content, like a web host.

We are aggregating vast amounts of data, and in our integration with Facebook for example, we don’t open up everything we get because some of it just isn’t relevant. Obviously this is a valuable metric but we are able to give companies a network value score to understand a person's word of mouth impact.
