The Gist

  • Innovative launch. OpenAI's GPT Store reshapes AI discovery, mirroring Apple's App Store's excitement.
  • Curation key. GPT Mentions addresses users' need for streamlined discovery, enhancing navigation and choice.
  • Seamless access. GPT Mentions enable easy, hashtag-style custom GPT integration, enriching the ChatGPT experience.

When OpenAI launched custom GPTs and its GPT Store, the AI leader introduced a novel way for people to discover AI assistants, echoing the excitement of Apple's early App Store days, or more recently, its Vision Pro App Store. Now there’s GPT Mentions.

Even great platforms need search features to help customers discover the solutions that address their needs. Apps rely on the store to curate options for users, preventing them from feeling overwhelmed. OpenAI recognizes that its premium ChatGPT users have a similar need for curation.

The much-anticipated curation for custom GPTs has arrived. Open AI introduced a new ChatGPT feature called GPT Mentions, enabling users to include the name of custom GPTs in a conversation query. The goal is to summon custom GPTs to assist within the ChatGPT interface, eliminating the need to switch interfaces for each custom GPT.

Mentions, a beta feature, is currently available only to ChatGPT Plus and Enterprise users. However, it's poised to gain popularity as interest in Custom GPTs continues to grow.

How GPT Mentions Bring Social Media Hashtag-Style to ChatGPT

GPT Mentions work similarly to mentioning people on Facebook and LinkedIn. On these social media platforms, users place an @ sign in front of a name, triggering the platform to treat it as an identifier. For instance, placing an @ before CMSWire in a LinkedIn post makes the name appear in bold, and the page's host receives a notification. Hashtags in X and Instagram have the same principle — to highlight and make words notable.

With GPT Mentions, users can reference custom GPTs in a conversation by using the "@" symbol. When they select the @ sign in the text window, a menu appears, showcasing the available custom GPT options. Here's how that menu appears in the prompt window:

The menu also includes a search feature, enabling users to locate a specific tool of interest. It presents a narrow window that displays the initial words of a custom GPT description.

The description might not fully convey the use case for the GPT. For a comprehensive understanding of a tool's features, users are encouraged to visit the Explore GPT page, accessible from the upper left corner of the ChatGPT user interface.

Learning Opportunities

Users can select the GPT and type their prompt as usual. ChatGPT's response will be informed by the selected custom GPT, integrating its capabilities into the selection process for its answers.

For example, the custom GPT from OpenAI’s custom GPT Data Assistant is called into the conversation through prompt.

The response to the query triggers an automated review of data for exploratory data analysis. Here is what the response looks like.

This approach simplifies the process by allowing users to access assistants directly within the ChatGPT interface, rather than navigating to each custom GPT's specific interface.

What GPT Mentions Brings to Customer Experience

GPT Mentions fulfills several functions. Primarily, it allows users to access various GPTs for specific tasks — like collecting data, designing graphics, or sourcing travel information — within a single chat session. This feature is particularly useful for handling multiple queries or employing different custom GPTs for each query.

Second, GPT Mentions enables users to uncover additional ChatGPT assistants that can augment their query responses with valuable information. Tool providers who develop custom GPTs benefit from sustained user interest — the menu continuously showcases custom GPTs, thereby extending their utility. Many users are becoming accustomed to relying on custom GPTs in the same way they would use an app for devices like Amazon Alexa or Apple Vision Pro, thus attracting further interest in the assistant as a product or service offering.

Thus, ChatGPT ushers in a new user experience, one that diverges from Bard's current extension offerings. While Bard offers extensions like ChatGPT, many of its notable extensions integrate with Google services such as Docs, Gmail and Maps. In contrast, OpenAI has encouraged users to create their own custom GPTs from the outset (as detailed in a CMSWire post). By empowering users to develop their custom GPTs, OpenAI has cultivated a vibrant community around its service. This strategy has led to a diverse range of assistants, attracting a varied user base to ChatGPT, especially among early adopters who continue to shape the AI conversation for ChatGPT.

With Mentions, OpenAI has the opportunity to create additional use cases that benefit marketers interested in AI, enhancing customer experiences for businesses that extend their offerings through ChatGPT.
