You need to have the right processes in place including a strong relationship between marketing and sales as well as a focus on revenue. I've had the following conversation a few times with clients who have implemented marketing automation: "so now that we have marketing automation in place we want to do ROI reporting - TODAY". Jumping into ROI/closed loop reporting right away can be difficult.
