AI tools used to increase global GDP by over $1.5 trillion

Dated 28th June’23: According to a study released, the productivity of software developers using Artificial Intelligence (AI) is likely to increase the global gross domestic product (GDP) by more than $1.5 trillion by 2030.

The programming collaboration platform GitHub claimed that more than one million developers and more than 20,000 organizations use its AI-powered coding assistant. According to the company, GitHub Copilot has produced over three billion accepted lines of code, making it the most widely used AI developer tool in the world.

According to its report, users accept nearly 30% of Code Copilot suggestions within the first year of use, and later discover that productivity has increased. The analysis of 934,533 Copilot users formed the basis for the study.

By 2030, there will be 45 million professional developers, and the report predicted that generative AI developer tools could increase the output of 15 million additional “effective developers”. An artificial intelligence system known as generative AI can produce new content, such as text, images, or audio, by identifying patterns in previously collected data.

” According to a press release from the company, “GitHub found that over time, the acceptance rate steadily increased as developers became more familiar with the tool.” the company stated in a press release.

” The economic impact of generative AI will be significant over the next ten years, and businesses and developers are already heavily utilizing AI coding tools like GitHub Copilot. According to a recent survey, 92% of developers use AI tools both at work and outside of it, demonstrating how quickly these tools are changing how developers interact with software in general, according to Thomas Dohmke, CEO of GitHub.

With tools like Copilot, less experienced developers have an advantage, according to GitHub’s study, which supports earlier work on the effect of AI on developer productivity. As they work with tools like Copilot, developers will become adept at incorporating AI into their work.

As a result, software development will become more inclusive, the employment gap will be reduced, and AI programming tools will become a standard component of developer education.

Our conclusion from all of this is that generative AI is increasing developer productivity, and these gains will eventually cause a rise in the global GDP and, consequently, a rise in the demand for software developers.

This has been the case with all developer tool innovations through the years, from compilers to open source, and it is happening once more with GitHub Copilot and GitHub Copilot X. After a year, we’ve come to the conclusion that the collision between AI and software developers won’t result in a loss of developer jobs, but rather in AI enhancing developer potential and accelerating human progress,” said Dohmke.
