The world of cybersecurity is an increasingly important, yet complex space for many, but for others like Derek Brink, Vice President and Research Fellow for Information Security and IT GRC, it’s just another day on the job at Aberdeen/SWZD.

Interview With Derek Brink – Aberdeen

Derek recently sat down with Aviva Zacks of Safety Detectives to chat a bit more about Aberdeen’s vendor-neutral reports and how, for him, the blend of business and technologies is what’s particularly interesting about his work. “I think technology will always change, and that is exciting,” Brink suggests, “but I also like how it helps businesses come to a more mature understanding of risk.”

What sets Aberdeen research apart is that it describes what is best practice, or Best-in-Class, such as what technologies companies are using and/or what methods prove to be successful. Aberdeen research is useful for supporting a plethora of initiatives for its audience of technology buyers and the people who deploy them for their own companies. This is also the community that consumes the research, in the form of reports, webinars, and so on.

Additionally, the sudden shift to remote work accelerated trends that were going on anyway: more flexible working arrangements, work from home, etc. Companies want to give people the flexibility to work wherever, so there were a lot of changes that companies had to make quickly, in order to get comfortable with not having those things under traditional controls, in their direct line of sight.

What started out as a necessity has in many cases created a number of new, positive opportunities.

One thing is certain, though – the future of cybersecurity is very much uncertain. As organizations are doing whatever it takes to become more “secure” and to safeguard against the unknown, they entrust Derek to help steer them in the right direction.
