The B2B marketing ironies of our time

Biznology

Let me share a few ironies that I’ve noticed, and I hope readers will add others to the list. Or tell me to shut up and talk about something else. . The theory is that if you post irresistible content to your website, you’ll rise in search rankings and attract interested buyers to find you. Which is true, but it’s gotten to the point where some marketers have gotten the impression that outbound marketing is bad, inferior, old-fashioned, or maybe even immoral.

Biznology

I listened to Michael Brenner recently give a keynote talk to B2B marketers at the MeritDirect Coop client conference, and picked up scads of great insights, tips, and strategic wisdom I’d like to share. Six strategies behind the trend in B2B client conferences

Biznology

Have you noticed how so many B2B companies seem to be running their own proprietary conferences these days? In conversations with several marketers, I have identified six reasons to consider it. Kathleen Schaub, vice president of IDG’s CMO Advisory Service, reports that customer events are twice as common (at 48%) as participation in trade shows (27%) among tech marketers. Although primarily for clients, many of these conferences are designed to include prospects as well.

Martyn Etherington Speaks: the story of a B2B digital marketing turnaround

Biznology

I had the chance recently to catch up with Martyn Etherington , a marketing leader I’ve long admired. In a reflective mood, he was willing to field some questions about his successes there. Where did you direct them to focus their efforts, and why? Customers have changed the way that they buy, and therefore we need to change the way we sell. Fast-forward, we went from the 30 users to close to 2,000 employees who are actively engaged in social media.

Fresh Insights in Selling to SMBs

Biznology

Despite the attention given to large enterprise marketing, it’s small and medium businesses (SMB) where the bulk of marketing investments go. SMB is where there’s enough volume to do plenty of testing. Plenty of agencies, research firms, and other marketers are focused on SMB, and willing to share their insights. Kudos to Bredin for figuring out how to persuade 532 busy business owners to take a 15-minute survey online, in May 2014.

Lights, camera, action: Video helps you stay in touch with customers

Biznology

One problem that plagues B-to-B sales and marketing is coming up with relevant, timely messages for nurturing customer relationships. A territory-based sales rep may be trying to keep in touch with hundreds of contacts at a time, but struggles to find a steady supply of good-quality reasons to reach out, without being a pest. The cover note is in plain text, inviting customers to have a look at the latest “Minute” video. Image via Wikipedia.

Biznology

With a tip of the hat to Barbara Walters , I’d like to introduce ten fascinating people who have brought new ideas and admirable energy to the B2B marketing world this year. Push versus Pull Marketing: In B2B, You Need Both

Biznology

The other day, a marketing colleague told me she was feeling under pressure to move all her efforts to inbound, or “pull,” marketing. Limiting your strategy to pull alone will reduce your market, and limit your ability to identify all the prospective buyers who might need your solution to their problems. SEO and SEM, which will pull them to your site and your content when prospects are looking for particular information. Anyone want to argue about this?

Digital Developments in Event Marketing

Event marketing has long been a staple in B-to-B, where the face-to-face conversation enabled by a trade show or corporate event plays a valuable role in launching or deepening a business relationship. Both Pathable and CrowdVine offer tools to help show organizers create a private social network, where event attendees can post their photos and profiles, search for connections and make appointments with people they’d like to meet at the event.
