The Internet literally has no boundaries. Its influence reaches into the far corners of the world, gives birth to momentous thoughts and ideas, shapes democracies, creates opportunities where none previously existed, and transforms millions of lives every day.
As of December 2015, more than 40% of the world’s population had access to the Internet—3.26 billion people. (Today that figure is 47%.) Its direct and indirect impact on global retail sales is no less impressive and amounts to trillions of dollars. With the trend showing no signs of decline anytime soon, experts estimate that the total amount of Internet traffic in the coming year will be more than that of all previous Internet years combined. So if your business is not optimizing use of all online channels, now would be a great time to expand your digital strategy for 2017.
In the meantime, as the year draws to a close, here is an extremely interesting and thought-provoking infographic about Internet stats and facts from HostingFacts.com. For instance, did you know that despite the U.S. having 86.8% of its population online, it is still ranked at No.25 when it comes to Internet access penetration? That’s right. Bermuda, with a whopping 97.75%, has the highest Internet penetration in the world. Even the UK ranks down in the list at No.15!

Wow this information about the internet is amazing! Can’t believe the first page was published in 1991. I remember internet speeds being very slow and waiting 5 hours just to see a picture of Macho Man. Now I can stream anything almost instantly. The internet is a new frontier.

Thanks Jeb. Amazing indeed, particularly the mobile stats. Smartphones are great for some tasks (listening to podcasts, social media…) but I still much prefer a desktop (or at least a laptop connected to a big monitor) for serious work.
