For example, on Wikipedia you can always find out why an item of information is there. People interact with the medium differently. In the days of broadcast, markets were abstractions created by advertising. Now they are real and social. Transparency is now an imperative. The entire process is open. More businesses will operate like this.

The popularity of social networks and collaborative projects like Wikipedia attests to these instincts. Given the opportunity, we seek help from others when making important decisions and willingly share our own advice in return. In a business context, however, tribes have barely been a factor.

The average length of a major league baseball game has increased from less than 2:38 in the 1970s to nearly three hours today, according to the baseball Wikipedia entry. In the 1940s, the average was less than two hours. I still remember watching Jerry Koosman pitch a complete game in the final match of the 1969 World Series.

Both are sought-after speakers and the subject of extensive Wikipedia articles. Andreessen (below left) invented the browser, cofounded Netscape and is one of the fathers of the modern Internet. Yet Klout says I have more influence. The problem is that neither of these brilliant innovators plays by Klout’s rules.

According to Wikipedia, ROI is “the ratio of money gained or lost (whether realized or unrealized) on an investment relative to the amount of money invested.” Our impression-to-visit ratio (as measured by click-through rates) doubled this year versus last year.” That’s an impressive result, but it isn’t a return.
