A Lesson From a Ski Hill

Phoenix Rising

What does that cost us in business and in our personal lives? I learned a lesson at Squaw Valley yesterday. It was a rough day. Over a foot of our famous Sierra Cement and more coming down.    Sierra Cement is heavy, heavy snow - think skiing slurpies. It changes with every inch - sometimes you move along, sometimes you get grabbed and stop suddenly.    It's an art to find your balance and stay down the hill when you're getting thrown all over the place.   He was being gracious and helping my relocate my ski legs in this stuff. My point?

We CAN be Civilized!

Phoenix Rising

Business priorities are questionable, personal lives are filled with violence and disrespect.  Signs are all around that we're sliding down a slippery slope. It's obvious to so many of us that 'society' is moving beyond civilization -  following the path of the once great Roman and Greek cultures.   The mighty quest for success seems to be rising above all things, including dignity, honesty, common courtesy and even our own kids.    Just when I'm getting depressed - a Bright Light shines. He is a beacon of strength and positive thinking.

He Said, She Said

Phoenix Rising

At least with a conversation we are somewhat focused on the person we're speaking with, or listening to, in the case of an audience experience. The fundamental issues aren't just in male-female relationships, they are all around us, personally and in business. I'm intrigued by the difference between what people say and what we hear. Communication is such a nebulous exercise. Especially with the rise of non-verbal communication in the form of texting, email, tweeting, FB posts and more.  We listen based on our own perspectives and experiences. Hope you enjoy!

Learning to Say No

Phoenix Rising

They know exactly where their boundaries are, in business and in their personal lives, and they honor them. I'm learning that skill - it's about time. I've always been the person who would do whatever it took to please everyone. I admire all my associates who just say No. When a client or friend asks them for that little extra something, they sometimes graciously decline. One hundred hour weeks to pick up the extra load at a client's? No problem. When a client asks for that little extra something, I add it to my list and keep right on running.

That Personal Touch

Phoenix Rising

Marketing departments in all kinds of companies are using the power of being 'personal' as a way to attract customers and win business.   Personalized profiles are all the rage in outbound marketing.  Somehow - that doesn't seem like a truly personal approach.    A mass production of 'personalized' information is just that - a mass communication.    Customers and prospects, friends and family see right through those approaches, especially when we aren't thoughtful about our personalization.

My Personal Trust Initiative

Phoenix Rising

My Personal Trust Initiative I'm going to step up myself and do the following five exercises to rekindle my own trust, and hopefully stimulate some trust in those around me. 1) Shake hands on the deal. I'm beginning a small project in my home. I've been waiting for a detailed estimate, but  that's changing. I'm going to shake hands on the deal and let the work begin. I'm going to show my contractor that I trust him to do a great job and charge me a fair rate.  So there's my own personal plan to add a bit of trust back into my world.

In an Instant

Phoenix Rising

I didn't know him personally, only on sight.  Life changes - in an instant. I was riding the Headwall lift at Squaw Valley last week. It was a gray snowy day, but all us locals were out playing in the storm. noticed a gang of the local hotshots up on the Light Towers, a series of gnarly chutes off of the Slot - a famous Headwall run. What fun to be young again! Darn it!

Crisis or Opportunity? It's Our Choice!

Phoenix Rising

Find a successful person and you'll often meet a positive, focused individual who is all about viewing the glass as half full or even overflowing, who sees opportunity in each and every situation, no matter how dark it may seem. Those are the key ingredients for success - in business or our personal lives. believe that a lot of it comes down to attitude and beliefs.   How?

Extreme Measures

Phoenix Rising

My righteous indignation is screaming! I get ticked every time I hear of yet another lawsuit filed by some person who wasn't paying attention, using common sense or who was doing something just plain stupid and was injured.    Remember the person who poured hot coffee on themselves and was burned - and sued the restaurant?  What happened to personal responsibility and just plain good judgment?  Starting with our legal system - or maybe with a return to personal responsibility. Sensationalism is not Expertise!

Phoenix Rising

Now the only question is, "What's your price?" Scott put it on the table when it comes to selling out our integrity for the big bucks - something I personally see happening all around me.   And now to one of my current personal peeves - the everyday sensationalism or just plain negative attacking comments that have become cool in our world. Tags: My Own Personal Soapbox Think Again Harvard Business Review ran an article last week entitled ' Let's Tweet About Something Important! ' I was yet again surprised by the premise of the article - that the power of social networking is being hijacked by frivolous, not-important-at-all information.  That's what social media is all about IMHO.

Fair Play

Phoenix Rising

Now that I think about it - we've even lost the concept of Fair Play in our sports heroes. I won't keep going - we all know the examples, in business, government, sports and our own personal lives. In our personal lives we'd learn to trust again - knowing that everyone we encountered was playing according to the rules of Fair Play. Tags: My Own Personal Soapbox Fair Play ruled in my upbringing - in everything from horses to golf to piano competitions to life itself.  The rules have changed.   Has Fair Play become ancient history?   Hmmm.
