Marketo Conference: Is Predictive Modeling The Future of Marketing Automation?

Customer Experience Matrix

Marketo held its annual Marketing Nation Summit this week, hosting 4,000+ clients and partners. The event seemed relatively subdued for Marketo – I didn’t spot one costumed character – but the over-all atmosphere was positive. The company made two major product announcements, expanding the reach of Marketo campaigns into mobile apps and display ad retargeting. Those struck me as strategically valuable, helping to secure Marketo’s place at the center of its users’ customer management infrastructure.

The One Marketing Automation Guide You’ll Ever Need?

The Point

Research company TrustRadius just published their new edition of the “Buyer’s Guide to Marketing Automation Software,” and it’s a doozy. Let’s face it, most martech “guides” are written by, well, marketers, and are either sponsored by or authored by the technology vendors themselves, so the content needs to be read with a critical eye. appeared first on The Point.

Raab Report: Financial Comparison of B2B Marketing Automation Vendors

Customer Experience Matrix

Coincidentally, I was already planning to write today about industry financials. I’ve been creeping in that direction with the previous two posts about revenues, growth rates, and market share. In a young industry like B2B marketing automation, the primary focus is growth, and I published some figures on that yesterday (repeated below). Good for them, and congratulations.

VEST Report: Competition in B2B Marketing Automation Isn't About Features

Customer Experience Matrix

Yesterday I released the mid-year edition of the VEST Report on B2B marketing automation vendors, thereby meeting my self-imposed deadline of July 31. Here are some observations: - market positions are pretty stable. The only new vendor to make a splash recently has been SharpSpring , which went from zero to 500 agency clients in the past year.

Marketo's Engagement Engine Simplifies Complex Marketing Automation Campaigns

Customer Experience Matrix

My point is that elaborate, branching flows are too complex for most marketers to build and maintain, and – because reality is infinitely messier than even the most sophisticated flow chart – will often give customers a sub-optimal treatment. It’s probably just as well that no vendor has ever built a system based on my design. This is something Marketo might want to reconsider.

Marketing Automation 2014 Industry Overview: What the Surveys Tell Us

Customer Experience Matrix

The Interwebs have delivered an unusually rich trove of data about the marketing automation industry in the past few weeks. Taken together, these provide a clearer picture than usual of the state of marketing automation. The reason is selection bias: most surveys are answered by people who are actively engaged in marketing automation.

Insights from the Marketo Summit

ANNUITAS

I have just returned from the Marketo Marketing Summit in San Francisco this week where I joined 7,000 other registered attendees from what I believe is now one of the premier B2B (and B2C) marketing events of the year. Here are my top four takeaways from the conference and what I believe are an indication of where we are in the B2B Marketing industry. It’s All About The Customer – And Marketing Must Respond. Marketing automation is not marketing strategy

Biznology

Too often, these days, I am hearing B2B marketers mouth claims like “We got this new [fill in the brand] automation tool, so now we can reduce headcount.”  Or, “Once this automation system is installed, it will take our marketing to the next level.”  Marketers sometimes see automation as a silver bullet.  (Photo credit: Wikipedia). This worries me.

Microsoft Buys Marketing Automation Vendor MarketingPilot: Start of Something Big?

Customer Experience Matrix

Microsoft today announced the acquisition of marketing management system vendor MarketingPilot , which will become part of its Dynamics CRM group. Marketing Automation is Not Marketing Strategy

ViewPoint

We are republishing this blog by Ruth Stevens (originally run January 29, 2014) because she hits the nail on the head about marketing automation. Marketers sometimes see automation as a silver bullet.

Oracle Buys Eloqua: Winners and Losers for B2B Marketing Automation

Customer Experience Matrix

Oracle announced today that it has agreed to purchase B2B marketing automation leader Eloqua for $23.50 per share, which comes to $871 million. When Marketing Automation Is the Wrong Solution

Marketo Spark Targets Small Business Marketing Automation

Customer Experience Matrix

Marketo today announced the launch of Spark , a new brand aimed at small and mid-size business. Functionally, Spark is pretty much identical to the standard Marketo system. Most of these aren’t of interest to small business, and several involve additional charges even for Marketo’s regular packages. Spark starts at $750 per month with no annual contract, compared with Marketo’s $2,000 per month minimum and annual contract for its full-featured Professional Edition. Whether Marketo actually makes any money at this price is questionable.

Marketo Conference: Small Changes, Big Picture

Customer Experience Matrix

Marketo wrapped up its three day Marketing Nation conference yesterday, having once more displayed its own marketing prowess by attracting national media attention (see here and here ) with an appearance by Hillary Clinton. More New Systems Challenge the Marketing Automation Status Quo

Customer Experience Matrix

Last week’s post looked at newer marketing automation systems that focused on small businesses. The general notion is that small businesses are finding existing marketing automation products too hard to use and would be happy with something simpler, especially if it costs less. It will be adding these as it sells more to corporate marketers, who tend to need them.

Why Is B2B Marketing Automation Growing So Slowly?

Customer Experience Matrix

Let me start by saying that the 50% revenue increase I’m projecting for B2B marketing automation in 2013 is a very healthy one. But still, as I noted last week, the growth rate is slowing – and for some vendors seems to have fallen considerably in the second half of 2012. Figures for other vendors are not publicly available but I've seen hints that several have slowed as well.

Bislr: A "Marketing Operating System" That Includes Marketing Automation As An App

Customer Experience Matrix

There was a really interesting discussion this week over on Scott Brinker’s ChiefMartec blog about the evolution of marketing automation systems into “platforms” that each support a swarm of satellite applications connected through open APIs. This means the platform strategy provides less value than many vendors and investors assume, although it may be needed for competitive parity.

New Marketing Automation Report: Venture Funding is Key to Success

Customer Experience Matrix

I released the 2012 edition of our B2B Marketing Automation Vendor Selection Tool (VEST) report today, an event that deserves more hoopla that I’ve given it. Getting Started Guide for Marketing Automation

The Effective Marketer

With all the (deserved) hype surrounding marketing automation, is no wonder that many companies, startups especially, are adding the technology as a key component to their marketing activities. Problem is, sometimes the rush to get the software installed and running ends up trampling the creation of processes, content planning, and other key ingredients that are necessary for a successful marketing automation implementation. But let’s say you got approval and have purchased the marketing automation software of your dreams. Happy automation!

Marketing Automation Catching On Fire

The Effective Marketer

Some have even suggested that marketing automation market is floundering , but it is such a new market and offering that is innevitable to have doubts, especially with these many vendors in the space. With time, a shake out is likely (in fact, the recent acquisition of Unica and Aprimo may point to consolidation ) and the evolution of solutions will ensure marketing automation has a place in most marketing organizations, much like CRM is now standard for sales departments. Marketing automation is still in its infancy.

And Our Forecast of B2B Marketing Automation Revenue for 2013 is.

Social Media Features in Marketing Automation Systems: Who Does What?

Customer Experience Matrix

Social media is arguably overhyped as a marketing trend: it gets well under 10% of marketing budgets (different surveys have figures from 3% to 8%) and results are questionable (it was rated the least effective content marketing tactic in a recent MarketingProfs study ). So marketing automation vendors are understandably eager to support it in their systems.

IBM May Buy Silverpop: B2B Marketing Automation and B2C Email Would Be Great Fit

Customer Experience Matrix

The other enterprise-level B2C email vendors ( ExactTarget , Responsys ) have already been bought at wondrously high prices, and every B2B marketing automation vendor I talk to tells me that potential investors are approaching them constantly. Although they bought B2C marketing automation leader Unica several years ago, they lack enterprise-scale B2C email engine and B2B marketing automation. In general, the market seems to reward growth over profitability, so these results may depress their price somewhat. So we’ll see.
