First, a confession: My first reason for writing this post is so I can embed a really cool infographic about Google on my blog. But the fact that I want to do it reflects the power and beauty of infographics. It encourages your readers to dwell on data they would otherwise skim over. | B2B MEMES OCTOBER 6, 2011 Worried That Journalist Robots Will Replace You? Say “I” Without the I , there’s no conversation, no meaningful interaction. They are not going away. After a flurry of attention last year , we hadn’t heard too much in the interim about the robots that were going to displace humans as content creators. Then last month, Steve Lohr of the New York Times revived the issue. The robots aren’t going to replace us, they’re going to free us. As James W. | | | | | | | B2B MEMES OCTOBER 9, 2012 Digital First, Not Foremost Technology is shifting ground daily, and the way people interact is changing with it. As publishers, if we want to interact with them, we have to be able to deliver our content when they want it, where they want it, and how they want it. John Paton: Misguided, or misunderstood? Print sucks!”. To my mind, that’s not what digital first means. It’s about which medium people use. | B2B MEMES OCTOBER 12, 2010 Is a Blog Just a Container? Readers expect more immediacy, more transparency, more injection of the self, and more interactivity in their news content. Photo courtesy Haags Uitburo. Today I came across a comment from Adam Tinworth on the reignited debate, in certain UK circles at least, over whether bloggers can be legitimate journalists. A blog, Tinworth said, is a container, not an activity. | B2B MEMES OCTOBER 8, 2010 Nine Keys to a Robust Editorial Career in Social Media In the social-media era, people expect to interact with editors and journalists in a variety of media. Every interaction, every assignment is a chance to make a change, a chance to delight or surprise or to touch someone. For B2B journalists and editors, the transition to the social-media era can be daunting, especially if they rely on their employers to lead the way. As an ASBPE-Medill survey of B2B editors showed last April, traditional publishing companies have offered little new-media training or guidance. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Be media neutral. | B2B MEMES MAY 2, 2012 Three Common Failures in Online News: Are You At Fault? The internet is by its nature an interactive medium. For most B2B publishers, electronically delivered news content is becoming an increasingly important part of their output. The potential rewards are substantial. In theory, any B2B e-news package consistently delivering relevant, high-enterprise, fast-paced, exclusive content should dominate its competitive space. But the evidence suggests that few if any e-news staffs are up to this challenge. ve come to this conclusion over the past two years as a result of two studies I’ve conducted of 100 sites and more than 1,000 e-news articles. | | | | | | | | | -
B2B MEMES | WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 2012 Twitter Challenge Update: 3 Things I’ve Learned So Far Interaction increases your appreciation for the people you follow. Now that I’m halfway through my self-imposed Twitter challenge for February, it’s time for a progress report. My goal is to tweet at least 10 times a day, balancing three types of updates: curatorial, conversational, and promotional. Rather than explain the details here, I refer you to my original post.). So far, I’m more or less meeting the goal. ve produced the minimum number of tweets every day so far, though doing so did require a couple of late-night efforts. m still a lousy self-promoter, however. B2B MEMES | MONDAY, NOVEMBER 21, 2011 Shakespeare Was an Aggregating Social-Media Pirate His plots and characters were frequently borrowed, his words undoubtedly shaped by interactions with his actors, and the final form of his output determined by later scholars and editors. Aargh? In yesterday’s Los Angeles Times , theater critic Charles McNulty wrote a marvelous column inspired by his objections to the Roland Emmerich movie, Anonymous. Though he disputes the movie’s thesis that no one with Shakespeare’s lower middle class roots could have written such great masterpieces, that wasn’t his aim in writing. But the accusation would be false. As MORE >> -
B2B MEMES | WEDNESDAY, MAY 11, 2011 Bloggers: Feel Free to Repeat Yourself The blog format is ideal not only for documenting this growth process, but also for enhancing it through interactions with and feedback from others. Big ideas justify repetition. Imagine: After days of writer’s block, you’re suddenly inspired to write a long and insightful blog post. You’ve found the perfect illustration, and your headline is brilliant. You’re crushing it. Then, just before you click the publish button, a small blip of doubt appears on your radar. Somehow, what you’ve written sounds so familiar. In a flash you remember: you’ve already covered this topic. So say it again. MORE >> -
B2B MEMES | THURSDAY, JANUARY 26, 2012 An Infographic on the Right Track: Grad School to Google Case in point: this interactive graphic from OnlinePhD.org, which steps you through Google’s growth year by year (thanks to Google Tutor for the lead.) The drawing is not outstanding, but the interactivity and engagement are. Though I was once a big fan of infographics , my ardor has cooled of late. Too many of the examples I see just look like clones of each other. But now and then I run across an infographic that is distinctly different, and worth sharing. Created by Online PhD. Where I think this infographic is on the right track is in suiting itself to the computer. MORE >> -
