Rarely does Google actually warn up of an upcoming apocalypse — but they did this time : Starting April 21, we will be expanding our use of mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal. In short, if your website is not mobile-native by today, it will no longer show up on Google mobile search.

Google has probably spent a little more time on its ranking algorithm than AdAge, of course, and it is certainly more complex.
