But CDPs have been developed by relatively small specialist vendors, which many enterprise buyers are reluctant to consider. But still, as I noted last week, the growth rate is slowing – and for some vendors seems to have fallen considerably in the second half of 2012. Figures for other vendors are not publicly available but I've seen hints that several have slowed as well. If true, these figures would actually be bad news for marketing automation vendors.

So I was more than a little perplexed to see the Aberdeen ranking, especially because I wasn’t aware that Aberdeen produced something similar to the Forrester “waves” and Gartner “magic quadrants”. Exactly how this relates to the vendor rankings is unclear, although I could find out if I paid $895 for the report.

If you read that list quickly, it sounds pretty much like every other marketing automation vendor. Both sets of vendors generally do a decent job with asset management, Web analytics and other reporting, although only the consumer-oriented systems tend to offer serious support for planning, workflow and detailed financial analysis.
