There is no dedicated staff, no editorial calendar for content production, and a heavy reliance on subject matter experts "volunteering" their nights and weekends to bang out a few white papers, articles, and blog posts.
And it's not just a matter of blogging more and getting more content onto Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube -- although social media clearly IS critical for thought leadership dissemination and engagement. Brian makes sharing easy through Facebook, Twitter, Delicious and StumbleUpon. Most microsites, eBooks and white papers are created, spread around and slowly die. Seems basic enough, but is this really common practice with white papers? Jonathan Kantor provides a list of white papers each Friday in his blog, The White Paper Pundit. This is a somewhat random sampling of white papers; Jonathan describes the list as a list of white papers posted on Twitter that week that do not require registration. In honor of the event, they sponsored a white paper by Yours Truly on the general topic of, um, why it’s important to make it easier for salespeople to review prospect behaviors that are captured by the demand generation system. I recently learned that Spiceworks surveyed 800,000 SMB IT pros to get their thoughts about registering for white papers.
