Simple Marketing - The Gas Price Sign

Smashmouth Marketing

Other than general vicinity and locale to your running out of gas, how much marketing does a gas station really need to do. I can see some of the top company branding (Exxon-Mobil, Shell, Sunoco, and Citgo), does anyone really care who they buy gas from? In many cases the only competition that exists is the station across the street. The direction you're traveling on the road may play more to your decision than the brand.

Proven Big M Marketing Techniques

Buzz Marketing for Technology

Marketing is the interface a company builds to interact with the marketplace and the customer base. The marketing group, combined with the sales force, is the point in the company where the market understanding resides. This should be the group that drives the company, that sells the marketing vision and message internally, and if that is not happening or doesn't seem appropriate, there is something seriously wrong.

That Clank When We Used To Hang Up The Phone

Smashmouth Marketing

Remember the old rectangular wall phone with a rotary dial that we all had before touch tone (ok, some of you just got dated as young). I was just watching an episode of Mad Men and without paying much attention I heard that "clank" sound when those old phones got hung up. That was one of the most nostalgic sounds I've heard in years. A simple "thud" or a "clank", some plastic, some metal.

Marketbright Targets Sophisticated Demand Generation Users

Customer Experience Matrix

I had a preliminary conversation last week with Mike Pilcher of Marketbright , one of the vendors I’ll probably end up adding to the Raab Guide to Demand Generation Systems. We didn’t look at the software itself, so I can’t comment on it in any detail. The slides did list a few unusual features, including “prospect portals” that help buyers and sellers to share information related to a project; a sales proposal builder; and features to work with sales partners.

Comparing Apples to Oranges Part 2

Smashmouth Marketing

I had to followup to my previous post regarding the massive proportion differences between European food and American food. So I lugged the orange and apple in the previous photo from Germany to home, and I placed some good old Whole Foods fruit next to them (btw, the reason the iphone is in the photo is for size reference - someone asked). My point is in the photo.

Comparing Apples to Oranges

Smashmouth Marketing

As you can see from the picture of my long time friend and colleague, Steve Hyde , cars are not the only thing oversized in the US. Our fruit is noticeably bigger (20% - 30%) than this example of an orange and apple from Cologne Germany. We were sitting having breakfast this morning and Steve brought an omelet to the table and it was small, maybe 1 egg.

Boycot of Overwhelming RSS Feeds

Smashmouth Marketing

I LOVE reading Lifehacker , Treehugger , Engadget and Wired RSS feeds, but over the years they have migrated from blogs with fantastic posts 8-12 times per day, to massive media sites that publish 30+ posts per day, at least a third of which are drivel. I am currently on a business trip and have not been able to read my feeds for a couple days. It's all baked up.
