In thinking about the topic, words beginning with the letter "p" kept coming to mind: Persistence: the number one reason, by far, that blogs fail is that they aren't maintained. Business Blogs: PR Tool or Marketing Tool?

While working on a PR and marketing plan recently, the question came up: are blogs more of a PR tool or a marketing medium? Blog marketing" outscores "blog PR" on a Google search by a margin of about five to two, and you'll find four times as many books about blog marketing at Amazon as you will about blog PR. However, Online-PR.com (which has a very nice list of blog directories and aggregators, by the way) lists about three times as many blogs devoted to PR as focused on marketing. My own conclusion is that blogs are primarily a PR tool.

Following up on my recent post on The 4 Ps of Effective Business Blogging , here are six more Ps to keep in mind for business blogging success. The bottom line is: as long as the platform you choose makes your blog recognizable as such by search engines and provides RSS feed capability, it will work. Being prodigious refers to the frequency and volume of posting.

At last week's Blogging for Business conference , Shannon Johnson of the What About Mom blog mentioned that someone should write a post about search engine optimization (SEO) for mommy bloggers. Other posts on blog SEO might suggest envisioning a sales funnel or Pareto chart to help focus on the most important items first, but c'mon, you're moms! then that's okay.

George Dixon of the Minneapolis-based virtual marketing agency KC Associates recently put together a concise but helpful summary of the pros and cons of business blogging titled To Blog, or Not to Blog. The conclusion is "yes," despite the fact that, as George points out, "there's no real business model for turning corporate blogging into a tangible return on investment." The article points out that business blogs can help build your brand, drive traffic to your Web site, and establish your company as a thought leader.

Charlene Li at Forrester Research has put together a nice report on how businesses can effectively utilize blogging (free, but registration is required for non-clients), titled "Blogging: Bubble or Big Deal? " The report describes the growing popularity of blogs; why companies should consider blogging; how companies can take advantage of blogs; and best practices in corporate blogging. Blogs have been highly popular and widely read within specific communities (for example, IT, marketing, and politics) for considerably longer.

Is Blogging Dangerous?

According to this post on Workz.com , blogging "has risks that should not be ignored." While there are dangers in virtually any aspect of daily life, Housley's paranoia about blogging seems a bit overblown. Blogs are given credibility by their authors. To be fair, Housley does make a couple of good points: avoid inappropriate dialogue, and remember that a blog post is forever: potential clients and employers may judge you years from now based on what you write in your blog today. This is a nicely written, concise summation of the benefits of business blogging.

My post several weeks ago about the emergence of blogs and the decline of the e-newsletter drew a thoughtful comment from Monty Loree of Express Marketing. As Suzanne Falter-Barns points out in her blog here , collecting email addresses from your blog visitors is both easy and a great supplement to RSS feeds. Your blog becomes the content container for the information you would have previously included in your e-newsletter, but with all the advantages of blogs -- timliness, informality and search engine-friendliness.
