Tweet Last night I met three other bloggers at the Publicity Club of New England’s “Blogger Relations for PR Pros” event. It was good for me to get out and meet other bloggers and to hear what PR pros are trying to accomplish. The one thing I learned, that wasn’t brought up at the meeting, is this: When you’re pitching bloggers, you definitely need a strategy. You need to determine what your news is and which type of blogger you should be pitching. The news agency blogger needs content all day long. The argument generally goes as follows: if you send thousands of email pitches to topically- and demographically-relevant bloggers and online influencers in one go, you’re spamming. The real way to do it right is to reach out blogger by blogger, with each pitch being lovingly and relevantly written in series over time after investing months of time, previous to actually initiating a pitch, becoming best friends. That’s all it took, seeing something at the right time, showing an interest and calling to share it with them. B2B BloggerA recent Gartner survey asked the question “Who is leading social media initiatives in your business?”. 35% of the respondents answered “Marketing.” 10% said “PR.” Nobody said “Sales” or “CRM” teams. The immediate conclusion to this is that companies are still falling short of using social media, and the web to listen. We banned social media early on and haven’t got round to reassessing it.
