JULY 24, 2008 From Shared Databases to Communities of Practice: A Taxonomy of Collaboratories
Pioneers in the social studies of science documented how the basic activities of scientists, such as deciding what counts as evidence, are fundamentally social undertakings (Collins, 1998; Latour & Woolgar, 1979). However, previous research failed to document some crucial barriers that make scientific collaboration more difficult than expected. This taxonomy has proven useful and robust for documenting the diversity of collaboratories that now exists, identifying associated strengths and key challenges, and framing a research agenda around these types. Move over SharePoint, Google's got a challenge on the Enterprise 3 blog states that "With the announcement of Google Sites , Google has unveiled a tool that incorporates email, calendars, excels, documents and presentation software." Through Analytics, it knows how much traffic the company's website gets, where the traffic comes from, which pages get visited most frequently, and who is visiting those pages. Legal Action C'mon, if Google really, intentionally, harmed someone, that individual or organization could sue, right? Err, advertisers. Adore it. Benevolent.
