Last time sewer line cleaned: 1997

Bungalo

About a week ago Acme Drain Cleaning Service left a flyer on my front doorstep. The flyer got my attention, and made me think about getting the sewer line between the house and the street cleaned out. It’s bright yellow and I left it on my desk as a reminder of the possible disaster awaiting me and my checkbook if I ignored this important issue too long. Should I call these guys?

“Wing Man”

Bungalo

As an avid kayaker, I have spent hundreds of hours on the water.  On certain occasions, unique things occur.  Recently, as a paddled, a Bald Eagle started flying back and forth (up and down river).  He circled looking for fish nearly 100 feet above the water. A few minutes later, I noticed a Heron on the rock bank also attempting the same task (catch dinner!), but the technique was different.

What’s wrong with neighborhood mailings?

Bungalo

Lately it seems every time we meet with a residential contractor they mention neighborhood mailings. “I tried job site mailings,&# they whine, “but it didn’t work.&#. This is not surprising. The purpose of job site mailings is to capitalize on your presence in the neighborhood. Makes sense. Possible. One-off job site mailings are better than yard signs alone. But not much.

The Advertising “Toll”

Bungalo

I recently listened to the founder of the Geek Squad at the Carlson School of Management’s Annual Entrepreneur Dinner, and a quote that is still stuck in my head is this: Advertising is the Toll that your firm pays for not having a memorable experience. At first, I thought this was quite harsh, but as you look into it, he has a point. How can you be fresh and interesting? Why or why not?

I want to grow revenue in 2010. Should I hire a sales rep?

Bungalo

Revenue was off in 2009, and you want to stabilize it, or increase it over the next few years. You have existing sales reps that sell, so why not hire an additional one to go out and beat the street for you? Before creating and posting the job description, keep reading: Are your expectations realistic? Have you ever interviewed a sales person who says, “I have a HUGE customer base, and I am sure I can do x amount of sales in my first year.” As owners and sales managers, we hyperventilate as we start to add the figures up, and plan for more revenue and bigger profits. Two reasons.

It seems everyone in the building industry is buzzing about search engine optimization or SEO — the practice of  optimizing your website so that you will “be found&# by the search engines. Competition to top search engine results for long-tail search terms like “St Paul Remodeling&# and “minneapolis custom cabinets&# is intensifying. How are you showing up?

Bungalo

Just returned from Southview Design Landscape Contractors business partner breakfast. One of the presenters was a fellow named Ronn Lehmann. Ronn is an “outside crackpot&# (some people call them consultants) who specializes in culture. According to Ronn –  culture is your company’s personality — it’s how you and your staff show up everyday. For customers, for suppliers, and also for each other. It’s also the unwritten rules that everyone in your company lives by. Things that are critical to sustainability and growth. What kind of culture do you want to have?

Referral Tips for Home Improvement Pros

Bungalo

While preparing for our presentation on Wednesday, Jan 20 – Nothing Left to Cut, Now What? – I came across these simple tips for creating more referrals. Most are common sense, but few companies have truly mastered all of them, so there’s always room for improvement. Make sure your clients understand your service. Keep them informed about your products and services, especially if you expand or improve your offering. Build referral time into your meetings. Let people know in advance you will be asking for ideas. Seek phrases and praises. Be worth talking about. Show appreciation.
