Some questions to start you off might be: Is the current vendor bidding on the project? The situation: A potentially juicy RFP falls into your lap. You try not to get too excited because you know that creating a winning proposal can be an expensive and time-consuming affair. Last November, after much consideration of alternatives , I settled on Alexa three-month Web traffic rankings as a reasonable way to measure the relative market presence of demand generation vendors. revisited that data today, adding a few new vendors and dropping some of the very minor ones. Vendors showing significant growth ( highlighted in green ) are mostly new entrants with below-average prices: Pardot , OfficeAutoPilot and LoopFuse. Ready yet?)

Spredfast Offers Systematic Management for Social Media Campaigns

Customer Experience Matrix

The system is a vendor-hosted service. Summary: Social Agency’s Spredfast helps marketers schedule social media campaigns the same way they schedule paid advertising. It seems like common courtesy to listen to an existing conversation before jumping in with a comment. If social media worked the same way, companies would first buy a monitoring system to track what’s being said, followed by tools to respond to comments made by others. Only later would they initiate conversations and, eventually, provide tools to help their friends spread the word. Silly me. On reflection, this makes sense.

More on Web Traffic Rankings for Demand Generation Vendors

Customer Experience Matrix

Last week’s post on Web traffic rankings of demand generation vendors generated a couple of private responses from vendors, pointing out that the Alexa statistics include traffic to operational subdomains for client landing pages and user log-in. But different products work differently*, so figures for some vendors include landing page traffic while figures for other vendors do not. Despite these concerns, I still think the Alexa figures are a useful measure of vendors’ relative market position.

The Goals of Lead Nurturing

Digital Body Language

Often, buying decisions are influenced by how buyers think about the market, what “fault lines” they see as crucial in comparing vendors, and what they believe to be possible in the market. One of the most common ways to use a marketing automation system is for lead nurturing. Also called “drip marketing”, “nurture marketing” or various other names, this is the art and science of keeping prospects “warm” until such time as they are ready to buy. At that level, there seems to be general agreement that it’s a great process to put in place.

But I expect the sales automation vendors to take the business for themselves. The attraction to vendors like Marketo and Eloqua is quite clear: they can expand the size of their installations by serving new customers within existing clients. Compare this with maybe $2,000 per client per month earned by most demand generation vendors. They also explain why some vendors have been willing to sell to new clients at very low prices. But these figures also raise the specter of sales automation vendors moving in the other direction.
