We just finished up Eloqua Experience 2009, which was a spectacular event all around. One of the aspects of the event that we were most excited about this year, however, was the concurrent online conversation and tremendous buzz that the event generated in social media. was asked many times what we did to have that much social media buzz at a live event.

It began in 2009. Tech companies woke up and saw the growing role of technology in the marketing department – web analytics, marketing automation, social media, digital advertising and digital creation. The CMO’s budget was surging and the CIO’s was receding. Tech companies started to follow the money long before Gartner Analyst Laura McLellan boldly declared earlier this year: “by 2017, the CMO will spend more on IT than the CIO.”. It started with Adobe’s purchase of web analytics company Omniture in 2009. They, too, are following the money to the CMO.

Note: I used publicly available data and wasn’t able to find Eloqua’s Series A, so I deducted based on valuation of their second round. Forrester Report (B2B Lead Management Automation Market Overview, Sept 2009) says: “…we estimate that currently between 2% and 5% of B2B firms have invested in full-featured LMA functionality … Eloqua (via CMO Brian Kardon) feel 5-7% market penetration is closer. Interesting to note that the majority of the players only came to existence not even 5 years ago. What do you think ? Very helpful article.
