Forecasting Clouds ranked the top 20 CRM blogs based on their content, readability and frequency of posting. As I read over the list of blogs, I discovered some new ones worth reading along with a number of bloggers I already follow. According to Forrester, only 2-5% of B2B firms have invested in full-featured Marketing Automation. Avinash has great advice for that in his Signs You Are a Great Analyst blog post. In addition to a marketing automation systems, these are usually CRM systems, content management systems, pay-per-click systems and reporting applications. Even though some vendors have been around for almost 10 years, Marketing Automation is still relatively new. But that percentage is rapidly growing. New technology requires people with a new set of skills, nothing new about that.

Rick Burnes notes that without a strong content strategy to back up social media efforts, marketers risk the “all hat, no cattle syndrome: lots of attention on Twitter and Facebook, but no compelling content to back it up and turn the curious into the converted. Compelling thought-leadership content, blog posts, white papers, video and SEO efforts support and create long-term value for social media tactics. Facebook’s InsideFacebook blog reports that in February and March of this year, the number of Facebook users age 35 and over doubled.

When my career began to take a new shape, it was his reports (when he was an analyst at Forrester Research) and writing on “ Experience: The Blog ” that, unbeknownst to him, helped me clarify what I wanted to do, why I wanted to do it, and how I wanted to do it. We are always thrilled to interview smart, insightful people on our blog. In 2009, the challenge was to get companies to start listening and responding on Facebook and Twitter. I run content marketing at Eloqua. Social strategy is, for us anyway, a component of content strategy.

BTW 1: Some of these blogs are more about lead generation, demand generation or inbound marketing, so maybe the title of this blog post is not ideal. Probably the most comprehensive study along these lines was Global Faces and Networked Places , released by Neilsen in March 2009. Social networks and blogs are the fastest growing application, now exceeding email with a participation rate of 66.8%. Digging a little deeper within the social media category, the women’s blogger community BlogHer reported in its 2009 Women and Social Media Study that as of March 2009, 75% of women participated in social networks, compared with 55% who read blogs, 40% read message boards or forums, and 16% update status on platforms like Twitter.
