Walt's Rolling in His Grave

Phoenix Rising

I grew up with a happy friendly Mickey - ready to lend a hand to support his fellow 'Toons' and always there to brighten the day with a smile. Mickey was the symbol of good clean living, family values and All American spirit. still remember meeting Mickey for the first time in Disneyland - at the ripe old age of six. couldn't stop talking about him for weeks. slept in that autographed Mickey T shirt until I was too big to fit into it anymore.I think I still have it somewhere in my memory boxes. Mickey was my hero. The new Mickey is scary. From what I've read - this new Mickey is dark.

Friends Who Are My Family!

Phoenix Rising

I've been on my own most of my adult life.    I don't mind being alone. I'm an only child of two only children who had me at 42. grew up as the only kid in my neighborhood. Now that my folks are gone, I don't have close family since I don't have kids. The good news? I get to choose my family. I've been lucky to meet great people throughout my life, friends who are my family. During the really hard times, when I was care-taking my mom, then dad, then my friend with AIDS, they helped hold me together. Then came Twitter. joined Twitter about six months ago.

We CAN be Civilized!

Phoenix Rising

Signs are all around that we're sliding down a slippery slope. It's obvious to so many of us that 'society' is moving beyond civilization -  following the path of the once great Roman and Greek cultures. Business priorities are questionable, personal lives are filled with violence and disrespect.    The mighty quest for success seems to be rising above all things, including dignity, honesty, common courtesy and even our own kids.    Just when I'm getting depressed - a Bright Light shines. He is a beacon of strength and positive thinking.

Ready, Fire, Aim

Phoenix Rising

That's kinda backwards, isn't it? catch myself doing it all the time. I get an idea, remember something I need to do, all while I'm in the middle of something else. I'm distracted by the new thought, so I get up to go fix whatever, grab whatever, do whatever, so I can come back and focus. But then sometimes I can't remember where I was going or what I was going to do. Or I see something along the way and stop to do it, then move on to something else, and remember my original goal, um well, sooner or later. 50+ mentalpause may be partially to blame. But not really.

Is Trust Broken?

Phoenix Rising

I was looking at a contract with my publishing house last week. It got me thinking about trust. This contract was lengthy and detailed. Fair, but very detailed. Yet there were still a few things I had to take on trust. I did it. But how many others would? My how times have changed. When I started consulting, I took client work on a handshake. That's all I needed. You see, I don't want to work with anyone who I can't trust. Today, everyone wants a contract. Mostly to protect themselves in case of litigation. What a way to start a relationship. Lost trust impacts all of us. Right?

Crisis or Opportunity? It's Our Choice!

Phoenix Rising

So many seem to expect continued failure these days; stuck in fear, focused on the negative. The economy is our scapegoat, and Eor's "Woe is Me" echoes resoundingly.    Yet some businesses and people are thriving - in the middle of the same 'crisis' So what's different for them?  believe that a lot of it comes down to attitude and beliefs.   How?

Changing My Game

Phoenix Rising

In 2009, I decided it was time to step into the life of my dream as an author and speaker, sharing my consulting experience to help  people think differently about how to grow their business. I've always been an independent person, rarely taking the tried and true approach to anything.  Hanging onto old recipes limits our success. We all have old recipes running around in our brains.    It's human nature to find and follow a pattern. We creatures of habit feel more comfortable that way.   Must be my name.    My agent fired me.

Think Small

Phoenix Rising

It's the day for New Year's Resolutions yet again. We're all making our lists of ways to be better people, do better things, spread joy to more of those around us.    What a worthy cause! So why wait til New Year's? We can make those same resolutions every day of our lives.    Every morning we can wake up, resolve to help out a fellow employee whose been having a rough time lately, smile at a gloomy stranger on the street or do that special something for a loved one whose been so good to us.  Small acts can make a huge difference.

It's the Little Things

Phoenix Rising

I found inspiration on my way to a horse show. My trainer is always better with caffeine in hand, so I was motivated to find her coffee. stopped at a little Ma and Pa gas station - the fourth place I'd tried. The others  were out of brew and too busy to make more on this particular morning. The pot was empty here too - what are the chances?    As I turned to leave the owner stopped me - offered to make a fresh pot. It wouldn't take 5 minutes, while I was waiting he'd run my truck through the car wash for free. What an unexpected delight! All part of her job.

That Special Holiday Spirit

Phoenix Rising

I love the holidays. Everyone lights up with positive energy from Thanksgiving right on through the New Year. We share our hopes and dreams, make big plans for our future, thank those who have blessed us in even the smallest ways throughout the year. We are one big happy holiday family. Offices are filled with laughter, camaraderie and just plain good cheer. We're flush with the holiday rush - closing that last bit of business while connecting with our customers and partners to say thanks for the great year. There is no happier time throughout the year! What changes after the holidays?

Comfortable with the Uncomfortable

Phoenix Rising

It always amazes me how easily we can become comfortable with the uncomfortable. That ski boot that rubs my right ankle doesn't bother me as much by the 3rd day - I've already started to get a callous to ward off the rub. That annoying headache from my new sunglasses dulls over time. guess I just plain get used to it. It's the same in business. Our revenues are dropping so we cut some staff, then more staff. The next thing you know we're operating on a shoestring. Our happy workplace becomes a daily dungeon. Everyone is overwhelmed and underpaid. Discomfort has a purpose.

Evolve and Thrive

Phoenix Rising

Intelligence is the ability to adapt to change. Stephen Hawking Embracing change is a key to business and personal growth. With change comes opportunity for distinction and value, new markets and new life. Without change we stagnate. We all know that change is a given. It’s pretty obvious. Five years ago no one had heard of a Wii. Phones were still separate from MP3 players.    The idea of selling over the web was a joke only a decade ago – no more. We do change in our businesses.    Yet we don’t change in the most important way. We get stuck in our own status quo.

The Path of Least Resistance

Phoenix Rising

Is it human nature to take the easy way out? I've been thinking about that a lot lately. Wondering if we compromise to bypass the argument if we disagree with our co-worker or let that guy be abusive to his terrified child in the grocery line because we don't want to get involved. Somehow, I don't think that's what our Founding Father did.    The Boston Tea Party was not the path of least resistance, although it might have been an easier choice than a head on attack. Business leaders who powered the growth of American industry didn't take the easy way out.

Smashing Pedestals

Phoenix Rising

We've all looked the other way when an admired associate or loved one told a tiny little fib. Maybe we glossed over the discrepancy when an explanation didn't jive with the facts. It's what we do - we trust those we admire. That's one of the joys of being human. We hope for the best. looked the other way for a CEO client. loved working with this guy. He was the ultimate leader - people would follow him off a cliff if he asked. He had duty, honor and integrity written all over him. So I continued to believe. Then I found out the truth about him. Darn it all

Power Chicks Do It Bigger

Phoenix Rising

Somebody commented that I was really taking it out on the Power Dudes. So, just for the record, Power Chicks are worse than Power Dudes. Power Chicks swagger over other women like no man I've ever met, while they're sucking up to the guys, just sweet as pie. We gals know the type - they'll trash you behind your back, set you up to fail every chance they get - and smile like your best friend whenever you're around. I don't know a woman in business who hasn't run into these females. And guess what? Power Chicks get by with More than Power Dudes ! She wanted more.

We Need Consequences

Phoenix Rising

Absolute Power Corrupts Absolutely   Tiger is only the latest in the line of 'Great, All American Nice Guys' to fall short of our God-like standards. We have Michael Vick and his dogs. There's Sanford, Edwards and Ensign to name just a few government leaders who've 'crossed the line' Let's not forget those special leaders of ENRON and Wall Street whose corruption brought our economy to its knees. We have Bill and Monica, Brad and Angelina, Tom and Penelope. Even Fox Mulder is corrupt. Without consequences, behaviors don't change. Oh sure, Wall Street fell.

Absolute Power

Phoenix Rising

Power is an ugly drug, a drug that many of us crave, some of us capture and we all believe we can manage oh-so-well. We point to those who slip and fall on the slippery slope of power, ridicule them and make jokes, knowing that we would never follow in their footsteps.    We behave as if those who slip and fall are the exception to the rules. Tiger is NOT the exception. Gosh how I wish he was. But he's not, and maybe instead of cracking jokes about his mistakes and the poor women in his life - we should all look a little deeper into our own actions, and our culture.

Lessons From a Porch Light

Phoenix Rising

The last few weeks I've had a barrage of pornographic messages on Twitter. They are obscene, graphic and embarrassing. block the senders and delete the messages, but they just keep coming. My other friends are getting them as well. We all feel so powerless to do anything to stop them - so we do the best we can and delete and block - again and again. My email reflects Twitter. Everyday I get a multitude of invasive, downright obnoxious and over the top communications. Companies suggest they'll make me rich, young girls suggest things I don't want to mention.    As for me?

Primal Thinking

Phoenix Rising

I wrote a post last week entitled Ready, Fire, Aim. closed with what I thought was a cute little double entendre' Something lifke "Who knows, maybe we'll hit the bullseye!" followed, by a picture of a bull's eye.the Wall Street Bull's Eye to be precise.    Get it? If we focus on our goal and hit the bullseye, we'll do well financially. My gal friends  got the pun. I had an email from a friend right after I posted giggling with me about my wit - and obsession with cows. Another gal friend DM'd me on Twitter to tell me she loved irony in my post.

We Get more Flies with Sugar

Phoenix Rising

My southern mother had all kinds of cute sayings about life and the pursuit.    This one came to mind this morning. "You get more flies with Sugar than you do with Vinegar" I was chatting with an associate  about a client of his who is in a battle with another vendor at a customer site.    There's lots of finger pointing about who was causing which problem. In the meantime the customer is stuck in the middle as his business grinds to a pace that even tortoise land would view as slow. thought he was kidding, but it turns out he wasn't.

R-E-S-P-E-C-T

Phoenix Rising

Aretha had it right about respect. We want it, we need it and we don't get enough of it. That makes for an interesting situation doesn't it? What happens in our society when one of the basic foundations of a civilized world - respect and courtesy - is a rare commodity? I'm not saying we're all disrespectful. know lots of people who are kind and courteous gentle men and women. But I also see a lot of disrespect - from snide not-really-under-the-breath asides to full blown bullies who are nasty to anyone they deem 'beneath' them. What a crisis that is. Maybe it is a habit.

Are We Civilized?

Phoenix Rising

I have deep thoughts at gas stations. I was filling Thelma (my truck) with diesel and a 5 gallon can with unleaded. As I was working the nozzle into the can, the owner gently took it out of my hands, smiled and shooshed me toward the truck with a wave of his hand.    "Ladies shouldn't pump their own gas." I was on my way home from the ranch. I'd been working in the paddock - digging trenches ahead of the winter rains and organizing tack. I was filthy, disheveled and looked like anything but a lady.  What a welcome surprise. He gets my business forever!

My Personal Trust Initiative

Phoenix Rising

This week I've been waxing on about trust. Or rather, the lack of trust. Without trust - we run the risk of losing -  a lot. We can each rekindle the trust. If we take a step toward trust, others will follow our example. The world won't change overnight, but we can change it over time. Hopefully before we have to sign a waiver to have a meal at a restaurant. So I'm starting my own little trust initiative. Who knows, maybe it will rub off!   2) Get a haircut.    I'm not going to tell my stylist what I want. He knows me, he does a great job.

The Power of Trust

Phoenix Rising

Without trust, we limit ourselves, our businesses and our world.   So, how's this for ultimate trust ? imagine a few cynics out there see a little dog with a death wish. Others may see proof that curiosity really will kill the cat, er pup. I see the power of trust in action. The power to defy even the most basic of instincts - self preservation. The power to change the game. When we trust in ourselves, we go bravely into new situations.   Self trust is the fuel that powers us to explore new worlds, test new theories, expand our horizons.

Are you Expanding or Contracting?

Phoenix Rising

We're all trying to do more with less. But what happens when we cut things a little too lean and the result just plain sucks? As the child of two depression kids, I was raised to be frugal, to 'save for a rainy day' - to be always ready for economic disaster. stopped short of stuffing the mattress with cash. But for years I was afraid to spend money on the right things in my life. I was a hoarder and I admit it. Contraction is not a path to success. former client called me last week. I'd helped them define their go-to-market strategy and positioning. My response ?

Buzzwords are BS!

Phoenix Rising

I’m not talking about technology or industry specific buzzwords. I’m talking about marketing buzzwords – that cross every industry and market.    Words like biggest, fastest, cheapest, newest, most reliable, most secure, most efficient, market leading, world-class, new and improved, leading edge. Three adjectives and a noun are not a value proposition. used a Random Positioning Generator with my clients for years.    As a joke. It contained four columns of words. The first three included ’chest thumping’ marketing buzzwords The fourth included relevant nouns.

Mine’s Bigger than Yours!

Phoenix Rising

Is anyone else tired of all the hype marketing? I don’t mean all marketing. I’m talking about the hand-waving promises that are so unrealistic as to be laughable. Perfect teeth in 4 days, hair re-growth in a few applications or a perfect body in only 2 weeks thanks to some revolutionary rubber band. Stretch it 3 times a day and look like a fashion model in no time. Do buyers really fall for that stuff? guess they do, or we wouldn’t have those ads all over the place, now would we?        Still, I don’t think it works for the majority of cases in the B2C world.
