Buzz Marketing for Technology

There has been a lot of discussion lately about whether or not brands should be on Twitter. Quite frankly I really enjoy and appreciate some of the brands that I follow on Twitter because they give me news about their brand without me having to go find it. Brands need to think before they tweet!

Marketing’s Customers: an Oxymoron or Reality??

In a recent meeting with Forrester analyst Peter Burris he pointed out to me that this customer is not a customer of sales but a “customer of marketing”! They may not be the ones you think I mean. No not the internal customers or your bosses boss like the CEO, CFO or COO. I mean real customers of marketing. Which is an interesting notion if you stop and think about it?

Social Business Q&A: 10 Questions with Augie Ray

It's All About Revenue

When my career began to take a new shape, it was his reports (when he was an analyst at Forrester Research) and writing on “ Experience: The Blog ” that, unbeknownst to him, helped me clarify what I wanted to do, why I wanted to do it, and how I wanted to do it. In 2008, the challenge was getting companies to even take social media seriously. I go back the Forrester Technographics that I used so often when I was an analyst. Maybe it inspires, or perhaps it irritates. But it calcifies, until we do something about it. And that’s one of the ways change happens.

Giving Sales an "Out"

Digital Body Language

Laura Ramos at Forrester talks about it a lot, as do most other luminaries in B2B, and at Eloqua, it's one of the most common things our clients ask us about. Any of us who work with longer sales cycles have experienced the leaky funnel. So, as marketers, what can we do to "plug" it. not a simple task, as leads leak out of the funnel for so many reasons; interest wanes, priorities shift, or sales connect too early or with someone without enough pull to get something done. Mostly, these leads just go quiet. So, how do we as marketers help?

The Tech Economy & Social Media

Marketing Edge

I enjoyed George Colony and Forrester's exceptional work in research and analysis for more than a decade. Forrester’s consumer surveys show that each succeeding generation takes more tech into their day-to-day life. And perhaps Forrester was wrong in 2007 when they said that Facebook marketing means communicating not advertising, as does all social spaces I contend. Like Colony, I have lived through the 90s enterprise tech ascent and the ‘01 free fall. Recently Colony listed 5 reasons this tech recession will be different. This is an old and tired perspective.

More Reasons that Small Businesses Excel at Social Media

Acquiring Minds

Before we take a closer look at some of the comments, I wanted to share with you the question that I asked during the Forrester webinar and Laura Ramos` interesting response. After my last posting on small business and social media, Chris Brogan was kind enough to tweet my blog and attract some savvy writers. At the same time, Ann Handley was a welcome visitor to ye old blog. A surprise for me: all of the comments were positive and relevant (except for the guy trying to sell me on doing business on Costa Rica). Is this showing up in the data? If yes, why?

How Do You Classify Demand Generation Systems?

Customer Experience Matrix

Note that while this seems obvious, it’s quite different from how analyst firms like Gartner and Forrester set up their classifications. I’ve been pondering recently how to classify demand generation systems. Since my ultimate goal is to help potential buyers decide which product to purchase, the obvious approach is to first classify the buyers themselves and then determine which systems best fit which group. Their ratings are based on market positions, with categories such as “leaders”, “visionaries”, and “contenders”. This approach has always bothered me. Indeed. Now I feel better.

An interesting conversation was started recently by Laura Ramos on the Forrester Marketing blog about lead management software. What do you do with leads or inquires once you generate them?
