What about in your own personal life? Try paying attention for a day and see what you find - in yourself and in those around you. You may be surprised at the power this little word is wielding over your life. When I'm leading strategy sessions, I start counting when I hear the 'can't' word coming from an executive team. They don't know why I'm putting those marks on the whiteboard. We can. | PHOENIX RISING SEPTEMBER 7, 2009 The Thin Line Between Persuasion and Manipulation What if I said that sales and marketing's job is to 'manipulate' perception in the market? How did you react when you read the word manipulate? Probably not too positively. Manipulation is something bad people do, right? Yet we practice the art of persuasion every day in our businesses. We bend our audiences' beliefs through the stories and information we share, through the brand or image we create, through the sales discussions we guide so carefully. Take Madoff's investors - there's an example of manipulation. | | | | | | | PHOENIX RISING MARCH 10, 2010 8 Signs of a Positive Leader Yesterday I added my two cents on sensationalism across so many aspects of our lives. Today - I want to share my perspectives on the signs of a great leader. Not the sensationalism oriented gurus that seem to be popular today. Those approaches may not be the best to follow. As Dale Carnegie said, " Any fool can criticize, condemn, and complain -- and most fools do." " So how do we know when we're following a true leader? Well, that's something we all have to decide for ourselves. But I have some ideas about what it takes to excel- as an expert and a leader. | PHOENIX RISING NOVEMBER 10, 2009 Walt's Rolling in His Grave I grew up with a happy friendly Mickey - ready to lend a hand to support his fellow 'Toons' and always there to brighten the day with a smile. Mickey was the symbol of good clean living, family values and All American spirit. still remember meeting Mickey for the first time in Disneyland - at the ripe old age of six. couldn't stop talking about him for weeks. slept in that autographed Mickey T shirt until I was too big to fit into it anymore.I think I still have it somewhere in my memory boxes. Mickey was my hero. The new Mickey is scary. From what I've read - this new Mickey is dark. | PHOENIX RISING JANUARY 10, 2010 Little White Lies There's nothing wrong with a little white lie, right? So we deliver an upbeat message to our team to keep everyone engaged. Why share the reality that the we're in a bigger mess than we want to admit, even to ourselves? It will only make things worse. Or we over-promise our capabilities to win a new customer. We will find a way to satisfy their needs, and they'll just love us when they get to know us. Maybe we stretch the truth about ourselves - our experience, our skills. We're sure we can learn on the job and do well - we always have before. But no more. | PHOENIX RISING DECEMBER 31, 2009 Think Small It's the day for New Year's Resolutions yet again. We're all making our lists of ways to be better people, do better things, spread joy to more of those around us. What a worthy cause! So why wait til New Year's? We can make those same resolutions every day of our lives. Every morning we can wake up, resolve to help out a fellow employee whose been having a rough time lately, smile at a gloomy stranger on the street or do that special something for a loved one whose been so good to us. Small acts can make a huge difference. | | | | | | | | | -
PHOENIX RISING | TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 24, 2009 Friends Who Are My Family! I've been on my own most of my adult life. I don't mind being alone. I'm an only child of two only children who had me at 42. grew up as the only kid in my neighborhood. Now that my folks are gone, I don't have close family since I don't have kids. The good news? get to choose my family. I've been lucky to meet great people throughout my life, friends who are my family. Sisters who I adore as an extension of my own heart, brothers who are always there with just the right advice and an understanding shoulder. I'm so blessed by my special family. MORE >> -
PHOENIX RISING | SUNDAY, JANUARY 24, 2010 No DMs Please Just when I thought it was bad - it got worse. We all know how annoying all the Twitter 'Thanks for following' DMs are, right? Mine have become downright out of control these days. I miss my friends DMs thanks to all the SPAM in my DM column. It's worse than email because I can't block Tweets. wouldn't mind the DMs so much if they really were thanking me and/or offering something valuable. But we know that's not true either. Recently I've been paying a bit more attention to those pesky DMs. " more loudly than usual. MORE >> -
PHOENIX RISING | SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 2010 Twisten Carefully Harvard Business Review ran an article last week entitled ' Let's Tweet About Something Important! ' I was yet again surprised by the premise of the article - that the power of social networking is being hijacked by frivolous, not-important-at-all information. We all know there's a lot of noise out there. That's one of the best things about social media - Twitter especially. People can share whatever they feel like sharing. Everything from what they had for breakfast to personal details I'd rather they kept to themselves. And there's my point. MORE >> -
PHOENIX RISING | TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 16, 2010 It's the Relationship! It’s not about you; it’s about them. Go Givers Sell More. Truer words have never been spoken. Whether in business or our personal lives, relationships are all about adding value to other peoples' lives. That universal law is quite simple. We just have a hard time remembering it, much less following it. We can thank our social training for that. We've forgotten the simple universal laws that will help us to create success in all our worlds. Go Givers Sell More helps us remember our truth. But the core premise is flawed. MORE >> -
PHOENIX RISING | TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 2009 Learning to Say No I admire all my associates who just say No. When a client or friend asks them for that little extra something, they sometimes graciously decline. They know exactly where their boundaries are, in business and in their personal lives, and they honor them. I'm learning that skill - it's about time. I've always been the person who would do whatever it took to please everyone. One hundred hour weeks to pick up the extra load at a client's? No problem. When a client asks for that little extra something, I add it to my list and keep right on running. I know this is true. MORE >>
