8 Signs of a Positive Leader

Phoenix Rising

Yesterday I added my two cents on sensationalism across so many aspects of our lives.    Today - I want to share my perspectives on the signs of a great leader. Not the sensationalism oriented gurus that seem to be popular today. Those approaches may not be the best to follow. As Dale Carnegie said, " Any fool can criticize, condemn, and complain -- and most fools do." So how do we know when we're following a true leader? Well, that's something we all have to decide for ourselves. But I have some ideas about what it takes to excel- as an expert and a leader.

Little White Lies

Phoenix Rising

There's nothing wrong with a little white lie, right? So we deliver an upbeat message to our team to keep everyone engaged. Why share the reality that the we're in a bigger mess than we want to admit, even to ourselves? It will only make things worse. Or we over-promise our capabilities to win a new customer. We will find a way to satisfy their needs, and they'll just love us when they get to know us. Maybe we stretch the truth about ourselves - our experience, our skills.    We're sure we can learn on the job and do well - we always have before.   But no more.

Walt's Rolling in His Grave

Phoenix Rising

I grew up with a happy friendly Mickey - ready to lend a hand to support his fellow 'Toons' and always there to brighten the day with a smile. Mickey was the symbol of good clean living, family values and All American spirit. still remember meeting Mickey for the first time in Disneyland - at the ripe old age of six. couldn't stop talking about him for weeks. slept in that autographed Mickey T shirt until I was too big to fit into it anymore.I think I still have it somewhere in my memory boxes. Mickey was my hero. The new Mickey is scary. From what I've read - this new Mickey is dark.

No DMs Please

Phoenix Rising

Just when I thought it was bad - it got worse. We all know how annoying all the Twitter 'Thanks for following' DMs are, right?    Mine have become downright out of control these days.    I miss my friends DMs thanks to all the SPAM in my DM column. It's worse than email because I can't block Tweets. wouldn't mind the DMs so much if they really were thanking me and/or offering something valuable. But we know that's not true either.  Recently I've been paying a bit more attention to those pesky DMs.   Obviously not. Can I help?

Friends Who Are My Family!

Phoenix Rising

I've been on my own most of my adult life.    I don't mind being alone. I'm an only child of two only children who had me at 42. grew up as the only kid in my neighborhood. Now that my folks are gone, I don't have close family since I don't have kids. The good news? I get to choose my family. I've been lucky to meet great people throughout my life, friends who are my family. During the really hard times, when I was care-taking my mom, then dad, then my friend with AIDS, they helped hold me together. Then came Twitter. joined Twitter about six months ago.

A Lesson From a Ski Hill

Phoenix Rising

I learned a lesson at Squaw Valley yesterday. It was a rough day. Over a foot of our famous Sierra Cement and more coming down.    Sierra Cement is heavy, heavy snow - think skiing slurpies. It changes with every inch - sometimes you move along, sometimes you get grabbed and stop suddenly.    It's an art to find your balance and stay down the hill when you're getting thrown all over the place. Even the tiniest mistake and you get slammed. I was skiing with my good buddy Jim - who also happens to be a Mountain Guide and one of the best skiers I've ever seen.

We CAN be Civilized!

Phoenix Rising

Signs are all around that we're sliding down a slippery slope. It's obvious to so many of us that 'society' is moving beyond civilization -  following the path of the once great Roman and Greek cultures. Business priorities are questionable, personal lives are filled with violence and disrespect.    The mighty quest for success seems to be rising above all things, including dignity, honesty, common courtesy and even our own kids.    Just when I'm getting depressed - a Bright Light shines. He is a beacon of strength and positive thinking.

Life in the Stream

Phoenix Rising

I watched the Super Bowl at home last night. I'm sick with a flu bug so I stayed away from the party rather than playing the role of Typhoid Rebel.    Wow!    What an eye opening experience that was.    Not because of staying home alone. And not because of the game - which was great. The WOW was  because of what I learned. It all started out simply enough. I was Tweeting with a couple of gal friends as the coin was tossed, then the game began - and then the ads started. That's when the fun began.   It was the ads!  Imagine that.

Stuck in a Rut?

Phoenix Rising

I sure was! I was in Tahoe last week as four BIG storms brought over ten feet of snow.    It was slick as a gut, drifted so deep in places that even Thelma (my F-250 turbo diesel truck) had a hard time getting through. After they plowed the roads, it was still a mess with melting, freezing and lotsa black ice. skied every day. To get to the hill in the morning - I had to constantly change Thelma between  4-Wheel Drive High and Low.    It took 4WD Low (with my wheel hubs locked) to get moving in my driveway and down my side street.   That got me thinking.

Changing My Game

Phoenix Rising

Hanging onto old recipes limits our success. We all have old recipes running around in our brains.    It's human nature to find and follow a pattern. We creatures of habit feel more comfortable that way. became aware of an old, and dangerous, recipe in my own life not too long ago. I've helped companies grow for over two decades now as a consultant.    Must be my name.    When I began to write Defying Gravity , I wanted to self-publish, primarily to have control of my content and direction.  know my audience and I understand the value I offer.

Recipes for Success

Phoenix Rising

Those B School recipes for success need an update. First of all - we're moving too fast to follow any set recipe. What was true last month may be old news today.    Even as our value slides from 'Oh Wow' to 'Ho Hum' in a matter of months, our markets spin in new directions.    Buyers change, fads change, the economy changes.    Market ingredients will change, so wed better be ready to improvise quickly. Following that recipe just may end up cooking our goose!  Every business situation is unique. The Bottom Line?

Ready, Fire, Aim

Phoenix Rising

That's kinda backwards, isn't it? catch myself doing it all the time. I get an idea, remember something I need to do, all while I'm in the middle of something else. I'm distracted by the new thought, so I get up to go fix whatever, grab whatever, do whatever, so I can come back and focus. But then sometimes I can't remember where I was going or what I was going to do. Or I see something along the way and stop to do it, then move on to something else, and remember my original goal, um well, sooner or later. 50+ mentalpause may be partially to blame. But not really.

He Said, She Said

Phoenix Rising

I'm intrigued by the difference between what people say and what we hear. Communication is such a nebulous exercise. Especially with the rise of non-verbal communication in the form of texting, email, tweeting, FB posts and more.    If communicating was challenging before our digital age, think how complex it is today. We listen based on our own perspectives and experiences. We read based on those aspects plus whatever is going on around us. When we read a message - we may have lots of other things happening at the same time. Simply because of our own filters. Hope you enjoy!

Learning to Say No

Phoenix Rising

I admire all my associates who just say No. When a client or friend asks them for that little extra something, they sometimes graciously decline. They know exactly where their boundaries are, in business and in their personal lives, and they honor them. I'm learning that skill - it's about time. I've always been the person who would do whatever it took to please everyone. One hundred hour weeks to pick up the extra load at a client's? No problem. When a client asks for that little extra something, I add it to my list and keep right on running.   I know this is true.

Never Say Never

Phoenix Rising

What would we accomplish if we believed anything is possible? I've been asking myself that question a lot lately. I'm transitioning from a 20 year career as a consultant, reinventing myself as an author and a speaker/business coach. There are days when I know I'm on the right track. The book is coming along, I have so much I want to share with audiences that I can't decide what to present in my first platform product. Everything is moving full speed ahead and I can feel my new life right here, right now. Then there are days when I think it will never happen. obviously hadn't.

Is Trust Broken?

Phoenix Rising

I was looking at a contract with my publishing house last week. It got me thinking about trust. This contract was lengthy and detailed. Fair, but very detailed. Yet there were still a few things I had to take on trust. I did it. But how many others would? My how times have changed. When I started consulting, I took client work on a handshake. That's all I needed. You see, I don't want to work with anyone who I can't trust. Today, everyone wants a contract. Mostly to protect themselves in case of litigation. What a way to start a relationship. Lost trust impacts all of us. Right?

In an Instant

Phoenix Rising

Life changes - in an instant. I was riding the Headwall lift at Squaw Valley last week. It was a gray snowy day, but all us locals were out playing in the storm. noticed a gang of the local hotshots up on the Light Towers, a series of gnarly chutes off of the Slot - a famous Headwall run. The kids here ski those chutes as baby-training and I'm always amazed at their ease and grace. Darn it!
